Ear is a very complex structure. It
being a prominent structure on face has its aesthetic importance. Any deformity
in shape and variation in size is of great concern in children and adults. It
invites lot of taunts and comments from all section of society. Inappropriately
sticking out ear also known as prominent ear or bat Ear is one of them.
Recently parents of a child with same problem attended my South Delhi CosmeticClinic because the child refused to attend school until his ears get corrected.
Why
it happened to my child
Prominent ear or large ear is like other
birth problems. It can affect anybody. Structurally ear has skin, muscles and
an underlying firm structure called as cartilage. This cartilage has elevations
and depressions which provide actual shape to ear. Prominent ear fails to
develop these features and look larger in size and sticking out. It is purely a
cosmetic problem and does not affect hearing.
Can

operate either in local or general anaesthesia. A cut is given on the backside
of ear and through that cartilage shape will be modified . Your surgeon will
create the absent elevation or depression in cartilage and will close the cut.
Is it a major surgery
Prominent ear correction is absolutely safe
surgery but not a minor surgery. One may go home on same day .It does not
require any bed rest after surgery
How long will it take to heal?
Surgical cut given into the skin
usually heals within one week but cartilage take longer time to heal. You don’t
have any wound or dressing after one week.
What are the side effects of
prominent ear surgery
Being a safe surgery it is not associated
with major complication. Main complication may be incomplete correction or
unsatisfactory results that is why thorough evaluation and customize plan is
required. Other rare and minor complications are infection, bleeding suture
gaping. It does not give any visible scar.
